November Rimfire Results

posted Nov 20, 2011 7:38 AM by Ron Leraas

Gene Pohlmann and Dave Wilson overcame the windy conditions to repeat as club rimfire champions -- Gene in the scoped rifle category and Dave in the iron sights category. Dave led his category from the opening target, but Gene had to come from behind on the last target to nip Roger Lankford.

Despite the unfavorable conditions, Dave set a record for the individual 50-yard target with a 200-17X, breaking the record he had co-held with Mark Turner and Alan Wilson.

TSRA State JC Garand Results

posted Oct 26, 2011 5:16 PM by Ron Leraas   [ updated Oct 30, 2011 7:35 AM ]

The 2011 Texas State Garand Championship has come to a close and as the ranges go quiet, all the shots counted and the results recorded I’d like to review the weekend for those that participated or for those that missed out on what was the last state match for the year in Texas.

After a welcome to the Terrell Rifle and Pistol Club and a short review of the rules by our line official, David Wilson we were off.  Clay Hefner got off to a blistering start in the Garand match with a 287X5 that would set the pace for the matches to come with John Jebavy putting up a good showing in the carbine and Springfield matches with scores of 351X3 and 273X6 respectively.  As the day wore on and the relay scores came in Karl Schultz and I were handing out CMP medals and logging results into the computer, but the top scores seemed to be holding fast.  The stage was being set for a Sunday show of who could best the early high scores and of course, what would happen in the Sunday pistol leg match.

Sunday came in as bright and clear as any fall Texas morning could be after a rain that cleared the air and promised excellent conditions for the second day of matches starting off with the pledge of allegiance and a first shot ceremony by 90 year old WWII vet Doc Byron Range.

As competitors turned in scores under great conditions the early scores from Saturday continued to stand up except the big dogs of the VMR match were now on the range and as Ron Lerass took over the line duties Robert Langham and Harold Pate showed what can be done with a Swiss K31 in the right hands and moved to the head of the pack.

By eleven o’clock it was time for the pistol range to be the focus of attention and we started moving rifle shooters onto the fifty yard range where Roy Plumlee and Gary Shannon organized our pistol leg match.  With the help of the morning’s 22 cal pistol shooters and a little cajoling by the first relay we ended the match with twenty seven shooters and produced three legs.

Now for the fun part of the report; I would like to announce the winners.  Clay Hefner with late pressure hung on and won the Garand Championship with a 287X5.  Daniel Miller came in Sunday morning and swept the Springfield match away with a 274X5. Ron Leraas not only ran the line on Sunday, but he took the carbine match with a 357X6 and owns bragging rights in the Unlimited Garand category with a 287X7.  Robert Langham showed up on Sunday to demonstrate his national match winning ability with the Swiss K31 and took home the VMR plaque with a 290X4.  Last and not least, the Pistol EIC match produced not just three legs with James Redman winning the match with a score of 264X3, but also allowed us to present the two newest distinguished pistol shooters, Robert Langham taking second place and Justin Utley coming in third.   Both men now wear the mantel of double distinguished.  Congratulations.
I would like to thank the Terrell Rifle and Pistol Club for the use of their first class facilities, all the people mentioned in the article for their assistance, a special thanks to Robin and Roger Lankford for running the carbine match and Justin Utley for cooking on the spur of the moment and of course, we couldn’t have a match at all without the fifty competitors who participated.

October Rimfire Results

posted Oct 16, 2011 9:29 AM by Ron Leraas

Eleven shooters took the opportunity to compete, and watch Roger Lankford break his previous 1600-aggregate record by 3X's -- new record is 1599-115X. Not bad for a displaced high-power shooter! Next month's match will be the TRPC championship - another NRA-approved 1600.

June Rimfire Results

posted Jun 19, 2011 6:53 PM by Ron Leraas

Almost all of the metric records were eclipsed this month -- course, they had only been set last month. For those of us who fired the mandatory 200 shots, our new classification card is in the mail. Next month's match -- again, starting at 0800 -- will be the shooter's option of three cards at 50 meters and two cards at 100 yards (total 100 shots) OR a three-position match on conventional targets, followed by two cards at 100 yards.

May Rimfire Results

posted May 22, 2011 8:38 AM by Ron Leraas

Nine very capable shooters were thoroughly humbled by this month's inaugural metric course of fire. We will shoot the same next month so we will have the required number of shots to get an NRA classification. I have also attached an updated listing of Range Records.

April Rimfire Results

posted Apr 18, 2011 7:30 AM by Ron Leraas

Results from the April approved 1600 match are attached.
The matches in May and June have been changed to be approved metric 1200 matches. A minimum of 200 shots are required to earn a classification, so plan on shooting both of them.

March Rimfire Results

posted Mar 20, 2011 9:23 AM by Ron Leraas

In the first NRA-approved 1600 match for 2011, Alan Wilson held on to capture high iron sight honors with a 1586-84X. April's match will be another Approved 1600.

February Rimfire Results

posted Feb 21, 2011 3:01 PM by Ron Leraas

Ten intrepid adventurers tried their luck with a metric 1000-point match, using the appropriate targets for that competition. Although the ten-ring is about the size of the X-ring of a conventional target, once they understood that the center of the target is in the same place on either of them, the match became interesting.

The March match will be the first of the approved 1600 matches for this year.
